Stills, 2019–present, custom augmented reality software, photographs mounted on aluminum, and single-channel video, dimensions variable

Stills uses augmented reality (AR) to place videos in the hands of participants, creating the illusion that they are holding moving images. Rather than stopping time, the photographs call attention to the constant flux of light and sound. The interaction evokes a sense of wonder reminiscent of nineteenth-century optical devices such as stereoscopes and phenakistoscopes, which allowed people to hold moving or three-dimensional images in their hands. Often described as “philosophical toys,” these devices revealed fundamental aspects of perception.
